The President and College Officers
The College is governed by its President and College Officers who are elected by the College Fellowship.The Board of Trustees is the most senior decision-making body in terms of the College’s status as a charity. In terms of professional issues decisions are taken by the Council, on behalf of the wider Fellowship. Council has over 40 members, and reports to the Fellowship at the Annual General Meeting (also known as Comitia).
The President
The President is elected by the College Fellowship and usually serves a four-year term of office. The current President is Professor Ian Gilmore, who took up office in July 2006. He is a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospitals and Honorary Professor at the Department of Medicine, University of Liverpool. He has lectured extensively overseas, particularly in the USA.
Professor Gilmore was previously Registrar of the College and a member of the College Council. He chairs the Alcohol Health Alliance (a coalition of organisations involved in highlighting alcohol-related health damage).
College Officers
College Officers direct the work of the College. Unless otherwise stated, are Fellows of the College.
For these offices, vacancies are advertised to all Fellows and candidates apply. Appointment is by an interview panel, the composition of which varies according to the nature of the role.
