The programmes are delivered on a modular basis, and are taken sequentially, starting with the postgraduate certificate in year one, progressing to the diploma in the second year and finally the masters in Medical Education. The full masters may be achieved over a maximum of five years.

Postgraduate certificate

There is an increasing demand for doctors responsible for clinical teaching to gain appropriate training and qualifications in medical education. This programme will enable participants to gain greater knowledge of teaching and learning processes, and to develop practical skills and techniques to become more effective educators. Participants will learn to use appropriate teaching strategies, and educational theory, to enhance the way they support learning. The postgrduate certificate is divided into four modules, each of three days duration, a tutorial day and a project-presentation day. Participants are expected to undertake self-directed study, complete an educational portfolio and four assignments.

Full module and assessment details can be found in the course brochure, downloadable below.

Postgraduate diploma

The postgraduate diploma builds on the postragduate certificate by encouraging participants to adopt a more critical approach to educational theory, and use it to evaluate their own and others’ teaching and supervisory practice. We revisit and explore in more depth, key medical education topics such as how learning happens, how to motivate learners, course and curriculum design, educational supervision and apprenticeship, and how to measure the effectiveness of educational interventions. The diploma consists of three two-day sessions, two three-day sessions and a viva day. Participants are expected to undertake self-directed study, complete a more in-depth educational portfolio, and complete module assignments.

Full module and assessment details can be found in the course brochure, downloadable below.

MSc

During this year participants will be supported to undertake an individual piece of research, with the intention of publishing it, when written up. The research can be qualitative or quantitative, or a combination of the two, in any aspect of medical education meaningful to them.

The MSc cohort joins together on several dates during the year, at timely intervals, to discuss progress with their projects and to receive peer and tutor support.
