What is the online CPD diary?

The Federation Online CPD Diary Scheme is designed to enable consultant physicians to maintain a validated record of all post-training learning activities. Each registered physician is given a unique code and password, which allows them to access the online CPD diary application at any time from any computer with an internet connection. Physicians should use the CPD diary to plan, search for, record and reflect on their CPD activities.

The CPD diary works on an annual cycle, which runs from 1 April to 31 March each year. At the end of each CPD year, registrants may print a certificate of the CPD credits that they have achieved, which can be presented at annual appraisal to demonstrate completion of required CPD.

For detailed information regarding the CPD scheme including participation, eligibility, the recording of CPD activities and audit of CPD records, as well as events approval, please see the following PDF document:

What are the requirements of the CPD scheme?

All physicians who are registered to use the Federation Online CPD Diary Scheme must complete a minimum of 50 CPD credits per year (one CPD credit is awarded for each hour of CPD completed). Within this minimum requirement 25 credits must be external, and up to 10 can be personal credits.

For a detailed explanation of the CPD credits categories and requirements, as well as advice on completing the CPD Diary, please see the following Information sheet:

Please note that the minimum CPD credit requirement applies whether a physician is working full or part-time, or is semi-retired. In the case of extended absence from work (for example for maternity or sick leave), a physician may claim exemption credits to make up those that they are unable to complete.
