Education is a core function of the Royal College of Physicians and one that we have been fervently developing over the last few years, taking an adaptive and flexible approach in helping physicians with their educational requirements. Through our provision of quality, relevant and effective education and professional development based on best medical and educational practice and research, we will meet the wider aim – held by the College, practising physicians and all stakeholders in medicine – of improving the quality of patient care.
The Education Department has developed a variety of exciting educational initiatives to support physicians throughout their careers, including:
Continuing professional development
The Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK runs a continuing professional development (CPD) scheme for all post-training physicians.
College events and educational programmes
The Education and Conference Departments organise an extensive programme of events throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. These events fall into three broad areas: clinical education events; educational qualifications; and non-clinical education courses. The current programme of events contains the following:
Clinical education events
Education qualifications
Non-clinical education courses
Educational resources
The College’s Medical Education Resource Centre was established in 2002 and contains a comprehensive collection of print and multimedia medical education resources which aim to support the continuing professional development and lifelong learning needs of physicians.
Fellowships, lectureships and prizes
Since 1582, the College has been the beneficiary of numerous legacies from Fellows and friends of the College, as well as generous funding from charitable and other organisations. The schemes that have been established with this funding have provided many doctors with opportunities for research into various diverse medical conditions.
Working parties and committees
Made up of physicians of all grades and experience, these groups enable them to express their views on a variety of issues pertinent to the medical profession.
