Frontispiece, A Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743) Volume 1Edwards presents himself at his sketchbook inspired by a classical muse. Appropriately, the tools of his trade are at his feet and he is surrounded by a multitude of exotic birds. Edwards felt that an artist should make their own etchings rather than hand over pictures to be copied because ‘it cannot be supposed that the hired operators had opportunity to study the attitudes of the subject while living’.
