Sir Charles Scarburgh

c.1660 Artist unknown

Charles Scarburgh seated in dark clothes and with long dark hair and a mustache.

This portrait of Charles Scarburgh (1614-94), physician to Charles II, is full of references to the range of knowledge expected of a physician in the 17th century. The anatomy book, watch and astrolabe all refer to his scientific interests while his classical learning is represented by a view of St Peter's Basilica, Rome.
