RCP named 'World’s Best Convention Centre'

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has this week won the title of ‘World’s Best Convention Centre’. The Regent’s Park venue beat off competition from leading conference and convention venues from across the globe.

The award was announced in Amsterdam at the International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC) annual conference. The AIPC is the industry body for professional convention and exhibition centre managers world wide.

The Grade 1 listed RCP came top out of an eighteen strong shortlist which included major venues in Adelaide, Istanbul, Toronto, Kyoto, Belfast, Orlando and Orange County, California.

Finalists were judged on the basis of customer satisfaction surveys which covered centre facilities, project management capabilities, catering and technical capacity. A ‘blind’ evaluation process was also carried out by an independent global research company to ensure an objective analysis.

Begun in 2000, the AIPC Award is now the pre-eminent award for the international convention centres represented in AIPC. Previous award winners include the Bilbao Conference Centre and Concert Hall, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Commenting on the RCP winning the award, AIPC President, Edgar Hirt, said:

They have achieved this distinction in a process that now requires even higher levels of client endorsement than ever before, and are a facility with a very long and proud history which is now reflected one of London's most distinctive and iconic Grade 1 listed buildings, overlooking the famous Regent's Park. This history has clearly paid off in terms of their development of superb facility management and customer service skills.

Commenting on the prestigious accolade, Clive Ostler, the RCP’s marketing & facilities general manager, said:

To be named World’s Best Convention Centre is fantastic for the RCP and great for London. The award is one of the most prestigious titles in the world, and to secure it proves that we are outperforming successful venues from across the globe.

The defining factor is customer feedback, and clearly the detailed comments of our own clients gave us the edge. It is further vindication of our rigorous approach to the processes of building mutually productive relationships, which means that currently more than 70% of our business is repeat.

The APIC award is the second major accolade for the RCP in the past few weeks. In June, it secured the ‘Best UK venue for up to 250 people’ title in the UK’s annual Conference Awards.

The RCP is an iconic Grade 1 listed modernist building with a distinctive combination of modern conference facilities and evocative heritage locations. Further opportunities to make events memorable include its medicinal garden and extensive museum collections. Recent events hosted at the RCP include the international meeting of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the BBC’s prestigious Dimbleby Lecture and the Joint Meetings Industry Council International Conference on Evaluating Meetings.
