RCP responds to DHSC announcement on NHS doctor numbers

The Royal College of Physicians has responded to the Department for Health and Social Care's announcement on NHS doctor numbers.

Responding to the Department for Heath and Social Care announcement on NHS doctor numbers, Dr Sarah Clarke, president of the Royal College of Physicians, said:

“It’s true in simple terms that there are more doctors than ever before. But it’s also true that more people need more care than ever before, and there are more NHS vacancies than ever before – around 9,000 in medicine alone.

“We need the NHS long term workforce plan to be published as soon as possible, so we can truly understand the NHS workforce landscape and build a supply of clinicians that meets demand. It’s demoralising for NHS staff to keep seeing ‘record numbers’ headlines when for so many of them, their reality is feeling burnt out from doing the job of two or three people."
