Modernising Medical Careers

The Tooke review of MMC

Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) has been a difficult episode in the history of training physicians. After a very difficult introduction and the problems caused by the failiure of the computer-based Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) we welcomed John Tooke's inquiry.

John Tooke's review, Aspiring to Excellence (the independent review of MMC) has been published on the Tooke Review website.

We have supported the Tooke review and would like to see its recommendations implemented. We made a formal statement to that effect.

MMC and run-through training

We supported the need to reform the senior house officer (SHO) grade and to improve the quality of training provided.

However, although we agreed with the original concept of MMC we had major reservations about the final MMC structure, which included run-through training. Our concern is that run-through training commits many young doctors at a very early stage  in their career (in the second foundation year of training) at a time when they may not have the information or experience to make the best decision.

The MMC website has details of specialty training and recruitment in England, plus the Foundation programme for medical students.
