Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

The Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTMH) examination is intended to test the knowledge required of physicians who wish to practise medicine effectively in developing countries. Further details are available in the Regulations which should be obtained prior to making an entry for the examination.

The DTMH consists of a written section with three papers and a practical section. Candidates who are considered to be 'borderline' having been marked on the aforementioned papers will be asked to take a 20 minute oral viva examination.

Notice to Candidates

During 2002 a system of accreditation of courses of study in preparation for the examination was put in place and will take effect from the examination in 2003.

The Royal College of Physicians will accept applications from candidates who have completed, or are in the process of completing, the 3 month Tropical Medicine and Hygiene course at the Schools of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in the following locations:

  • Glasgow
  • Liverpool
  • London
  • Sheffield

Examination candidates will need to submit evidence to confirm your attendance at one of these courses.
