Draft guidance for physicians is based on an Academy of Medical Royal Colleges' agreed core content for all doctors.

The GMC has set out the requirements for revalidation for all doctors in their Good Medical Practice framework for revalidation, and guidance on supporting information.  The medical royal colleges and faculties are responsible for defining the specialty-specific requirements for revalidation that will enable a doctor practising in a specialty to demonstrate that they meet the professional standards.

Each medical royal college and faculty has now produced consistent guidance on supporting information that builds closely on the GMC's requirements and describes the supporting information required.

The draft guidance for physicians is based on an Academy of Medical Royal Colleges' agreed core content for all doctors, with additional information for physicians.  The guidance is applicable for all physicians, and has been developed with extensive input from all physician specialties.  The RCP is continuing to work with specialty associations and societies to ensure that information and advice is available to help physicians to meet the requirements in the context of their specialist practice.

The guidance sets out the supporting information that physicians should submit at their annual appraisals over the five-year revalidation period, and this should be sufficient to assure the appraiser of the quality of a physician’s professional performance in all areas of their current practice, and in relation to the domains and attributes of Good Medical Practice.

The draft guidance for physicians was released for consultation in September 2011 and can be downloaded below.  The final physician guidance document will be published in June 2012.
