Reports for Round 7 of the clinical audit were made available to trusts on 28 February 2011. The public report is available to download below and an updated Easy Access Version, combining results from both the Clinical and Organisational parts of the 2010 audit, is also available for download ("National Sentinel Stroke Audit 2010 - easy access version").

The National Sentinel Stroke Audit is conducted by The Royal College of Physicians on behalf of the Intercollegiate Stroke Working Party and is centrally funded by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP). It monitors the rate of progress in stroke care services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in a two year cycle. The audit consists of two components which focus on the organisation of care (Organisational Audit) and the process of care (Clinical Audit). 

We aim to build on the work of previous rounds demonstrating that national audit can help improve the quality of care by involving trusts across the country in large-scale audit that enables them to compare their results to the national data (Irwin et al 2005).

History of the National Sentinel Stroke Audit

The Royal College of Physicians conducted the first round of National Sentinel Stroke Audit in 1998 and have since conducted further rounds in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. The first and second rounds were funded by the Department of Health and the third round by a consortium of funders including the Stroke Association. The fourth and fifth rounds were funded by the Healthcare Commission. The objective of the sentinel audit is to assess the quality of care for people who have had a stroke and to help trusts use audit as a means of quality improvement. The audit is based on evidence-based standards for the organisation of services and process of care agreed by the representatives of the Colleges and professional organisations of the disciplines involved in the management of stroke.

The key messages from rounds of the audit are published in a series of reports, Rounds 3 -6.

Patient Survey

The Healthcare Commission commissioned a Patient Survey from the Picker Institute (Europe) in one third of trusts in England. The survey was planned in collaboration with the CEEu, the Stroke Association, Different Strokes and members of the working party. It took place at the same time as the audit to include all discharged stroke patients who were admitted between April and June 2004.
