Census of consultant physicians and medical registrars in the UK

Each autumn, the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians conducts its census, sent to all UK consultant physicians and medical registrars in general medical specialties. In the census we request information about job-plans, workloads and responsibilities.

The Federation is committed to improving medical standards and advocates changes in trainee numbers and funding for consultant posts. In order to do so it is vital that we gather data on, and monitor, the expansion/contraction of physician numbers in the specialties. Evidence from the census helps the Federation to make its policy decisions on such matters.

Following the introduction of the European Working Time Directive in 2009, and given the financial pressures many hospitals are currently experiencing, we are especially interested in the impact that these are having on the working lives of physicians.

We publish the census results annually, and consider this to be the highest quality data available in the UK concerning the medical workforce.
