Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine comprises all applications of radioactive materials in diagnosis, therapy and research, with the exception of the use of sealed radiation sources in radiotherapy. l The range and complexity of diagnostic investigations has increased considerably in recent years, reflecting both continuing radiopharmaceutical development and the wider availability of tomographic cameras. Advances in drug radiolabelling and delivery systems have led to a parallel expansion in unsealed source therapy, extending the range of conditions that can be treated by this approach. The rising importance of positron emission tomography using dedicated scanners or by adaptation of gamma cameras will have a major impact upon future workload patterns.
