The Northern Ireland region is supported by a dedicated RCP regional office.

Our regional office is involved with a range of educational activities both regional and national: one major conference per year, PACES demonstration evenings are linked from RCPSG – prior to each diet of PACES.

The regional office coordinates and facilitates the MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 examinations held in Belfast. Approval for consultant and specialty doctor job descriptions is coordinated through the regional office for new and replacement appointments for the region.

School of medicine

The Royal College of Physicians has supported the creation of specialty-based schools of medicine within each deanery, which will supervise trainees within Basic Medical Training and all 30 Higher Specialist Training programmes.

Heads of schools have now been appointed in most deaneries. The appointment process was deanery-based, with the posts being advertised. In most cases the RCP and the deanery cooperated, which variously included the RCP commenting on the job description, advertising the role to fellows, and being represented on the appointment panel. In the majority of cases the person appointed has previously served as a regional adviser.

The appointment of a head of School of Medicine for the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency is to be confirmed.
