The West Midlands region is supported by a dedicated RCP regional office.
The West Midlands regional advisers steer the education programme for the region. They each have a quality assurance role for both the RCP and the West Midlands Deanery, and all form part of the West Midlands Postgraduate School of Medicine Board.
The West Midlands regional office is involved with a range of educational activities both regional and national; two major conferences per year, three day residential Birmingham Movement Disorders course every two years aimed at trainees in neurology and geriatric medicine, regular general medicine and acute medicine SpR training days, national radioiodine training days, and CMT PACES communication skills and teaching.
The regional office coordinates and facilitates the MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 examinations held in Birmingham. Approval for consultant and specialty doctor job descriptions is coordinated through the regional office for new and replacement appointments for the region.

School of medicine
The Royal College of Physicians has supported the creation of specialty-based schools of medicine within each deanery, which will supervise trainees within Basic Medical Training and all 30 Higher Specialist Training programmes.
Heads of schools have now been appointed in most deaneries. The appointment process was deanery-based, with the posts being advertised. In most cases the RCP and the deanery cooperated, which variously included the RCP commenting on the job description, advertising the role to fellows, and being represented on the appointment panel. In the majority of cases the person appointed has previously served as a regional adviser.
Dr Andrew Whitehouse is Head of School of Medicine for the West Midlands Workforce Deanery.
