Dr Aine Burns

Consultant nephrologist and director of post-graduate medical education, Royal Free Hospital

Dr Aine Burns is an elected member of Council at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

Dr Burns qualified in Ireland in 1983 and was awarded an MD in 1991 for bench research conducted at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith. She completed her renal training in London and has spent almost 30 years working as a clinical nephrologist and honorary senior lecturer at the UCL Centre for Nephrology at Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust London, being promoted to UCL professor of postgraduate medical education and nephrology in 2017.

Her areas of special interest in addition to postgraduate medical education are chronic kidney disease in the elderly, conservative management of end-stage kidney disease, end-of-life issues in medicine and autoimmune conditions such as vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and until recently she looked after the renal needs of most of the Fabry disease patients in the UK. She has published extensively on these topics and led good practice, particularly in the area of conservative care.
