Dr James Calvert

Consultant respiratory physician (North Bristol Lung Centre) and associate medical director (North Bristol NHS Trust)

Dr Calvert is an Oxford and Harvard University graduate, with a PhD in Respiratory Epidemiology. He is currently working as a consultant respiratory physician at the North Bristol Lung Centre and associate medical director at the North Bristol NHS Trust.

James qualified in Medicine from Oxford University in 1992 before gaining a Masters Degree in Public Health at Harvard University as a Fulbright Scholar. He then completed his PhD in Respiratory Epidemiology, and obtained his clinical training in posts in Oxford, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

James was appointed as a consultant and honorary senior lecturer in Bristol in 2006, and is lead clinician for respiratory medicine and associate medical director at NBT. He was co-respiratory lead at the South West Strategic Health Authority/NHS England for 5 years, working in Partnership with colleagues to improve access to integrated services for respiratory patients. He has chaired the British Thoracic Society Professional & Organisational Standards Committee, and is currently the National Audit Lead at the BTS.

Throughout his consultant career he has been involved with quality improvement at local and national level, and has recently worked at the BTS to develop and pilot care bundles for patients with respiratory disease as well as facilitating a project to test implementation of these using the NHS Model for Improvement.
