Special adviser on tobacco

Professor Sanjay Agrawal is a consultant in respiratory and critical care medicine at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Sanjay has a specialist interest in treatment of tobacco dependency and NHS financial management, alongside clinical care for patients with interstitial lung disease, lung cancer and patients with critical illness.

He qualified from the University of Dundee in 1991 and went on to complete his postgraduate training in the United States of America at Boston University Medical Centre and Yale University.

Sanjay also chairs the RCP Tobacco Advisory Group (TAG). TAG informs and develops our work relating to tobacco control and smoking cessation.

The purpose of the special adviser on tobacco is to: 

  • advise the RCP on issues relating to tobacco and related harms 
  • act as a primary RCP spokesperson to the media on tobacco, as advised by the RCP’s media team and/or senior officers 
  • lead the RCP tobacco advisory group and the production of RCP reports on tobacco.
