Clinicians as researchers

As part of the RCP research strategy, we aim to provide support to experienced clinicians across the profession seeking to develop their research skills via the development of a suite of courses and opportunities to work alongside others.

The RCP, leading on behalf of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) and working with NIHR CRN co-ordinating centre, have been developing an innovative interprofessional credential framework and proof of concept programme in order to support increased participation (of clinicians and patients) in networked clinical research studies. This will target the large number of experienced clinicians who did not follow an academic training pathway and would like to contribute to clinical research.

As part of this the NIHR, in partnership with the AoMRC, have launched a new competition inviting Higher Education Institutions to apply for funding to develop a Postgraduate Certificate focused on the practical elements of clinical research. This qualification will form part of the new NIHR-AoMRC Clinician Researcher Credentials Framework.

Apply to join our pilot Research Practice Experience for free!

We are running a pilot of our stand-alone research practice experience for 20 clinicians. This module will be accepted towards the upcoming new research credential as part of a Post Graduate Certificate. The cost would normally be £400 for this 6-month module but will be free of charge for participants of the pilot.

We particularly hope there will be applicants who wish to develop research capability in the following areas:

  • Ageing
  • Surgery
  • Neurological disorders
  • Dementias and neurodegeneration
  • Primary care
  • Hepatology
  • Critical Care
  • Anaesthesia
  • Mental health
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Reproductive health (aiming at midwifery)

However, we welcome applications from other specialties as well, please apply stating your specialty and role and we will hope to be able to match you to a supervisor and research study.

We are looking for clinicians in all areas (doctors, nurses, AHPs etc) who have not followed a clinical academic training pathway and now wish to be involved in networked clinical research.  Applicants should be experienced clinicians, having been in the workforce for a number of years but not having the opportunity to be research active during this time. They should be at a point in their career where they are ready to expand what they do and are looking for a change in emphasis or focus, and have time to complete the module (approx. 200 hours) over the next six months.

We will ask participants to take part in extensive feedback to allow us to improve and fine tune the module.

If you are interested please complete the form . Closing date is 11 June 2021 and results from the combined screening and lottery system used for selection will be emailed by 28 June 2021 to all who have applied. Those who are successful will need to sign up to the Terms & Conditions (available in the pdf at the bottom of this page), then they will be assigned a supervisor over the following two weeks and will start the pilot as soon as possible.
