The SuppoRTT (Supported Return to Training) programme was developed by HEE to enable trainees to have a safe, supported return to work following a period of long-term absence (3 months or more).
It aims to offer a wide range of learning and support resources, which can be used to create a bespoke package to suit each trainee’s individual needs.
The programme is administered by the educational supervisor of the returning trainee with the support of Trust and School SuppoRTT champions. All educational supervisors of trainees returning from long-term absence should be actively engaging with this process and local HEE offices are running regular training events for educational supervisors. Many specialities are developing specialty-specific SuppoRTT courses for trainees prior to return. The RCP supports the development of these courses and encourages individual trainers to consider this. The HEE SuppoRTT programme has regular funding rounds.
