'Assessing trainees in the workplace' is a flexible and practical e-learning package that consists of 3 hours of CPD-approved online training. This interactive learning will cover feedback, supervised learning events (SLEs), workplace-based assessments (WPBAs), and the role of the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).

The course is aimed at secondary care doctors who will be assessing trainees, giving insight into what makes good practice and effective feedback. It offers a range of activities including e-lessons, videos, interactive scenarios and quizzes. What does this e-learning package cover?

This package covers the principles and methods of assessing trainees in the workplace with the revisions implemented from August 2014. The learning will cover feedback, supervised learning events (SLEs), workplace-based assessments (WPBAs) and the role of the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP). What is workplace-based assessment?

Workplace-based assessments provide an opportunity to observe, rate and feedback upon aspects of a trainee doctor's practice that are best observed in the authentic clinical environment. Typically, the assessments consist of structured forms which direct the assessor's attention towards particular aspects of clinical practice, such as communication skills, procedural skills and clinical judgement.

What are supervised learning events (SLEs)?

Supervised learning events (SLEs) are educational encounters in which assessors observe, and feedback upon, aspects of a trainee doctor's clinical practice. Like workplace-based assessments, SLEs consist of structured forms which direct the assessor's attention towards particular aspects of clinical practice, such as communication skills or clinical judgement.

Who should purchase this e-learning package?

Any secondary care doctor who works in England and who is in charge of assessing trainees will benefit from purchasing this e-learning package. Trainers/assessors are usually consultants or senior doctors in training, but may also be experienced nurses or allied health professionals. Please note that this e-learning package is aimed at those who will be assessing trainees, rather than trainees who will be assessed.

Does this module offer CPD accreditation?

This module offers three external CPD credits. Please note that the entire package must be completed in order to gain CPD credits. If completed activities are not completed or are completed and score below the pass mark of 80%, users will not be able to claim a CPD certificate.

What are the IT requirements?

Remember to download the latest version of your browser when an update is available, and delete your internet history regularly, as this helps to avoid accessibility issues. PC/Mac spec: • PC running Windows Vista 7 or later • Mac running Mac OS 10.7 or later • Adobe Flash Player 6.0.79 or later. Mobile devices: All content can be accessed on PCs, Macs and iPads. Please note that e-lessons and quizzes can now also be completed on iPads, with Mobile Safari in Apple iOS 5.0 or later. Please be advised that mobile browsers and operating systems can cause some inconsistency in display and therefore quizzes especially are usually best completed on a desktop for optimum interaction.

How long will I have access for?

You will have full access to the package for 3 months. Please note that you can download PDFs as well as quick guides and useful links.

I am unable to view the videos – what can I do?

Playback of multimedia content such as videos can vary, depending on your network performance and settings. In particular, some trusts do not allow videos to be viewed. This e-learning package requires access to the videos in order to complete CPD activities, so those attempting to access the modules from within trusts which do not meet the IT requirements may want to access the learning from home or another computer outside the trust.
