How to find a consultant and verify licence to practice

The Royal College of Physicians is a professional body aiming to improve the quality of patient care by continually raising medical standards. We are not able to provide a patient referral service nor can we recommend consultants to patients. We would advise patients to consult their general practitioner for referral to a specialist. If appropriate, GPs should be able to arrange appointments for a second opinion either by another GP or a hospital doctor.

Patients wishing to identify and contact a specialist or consultant directly may refer to NHS Choices consultant guide. This is a free online database, which can be searched by specialty and postcode:

www.nhs.uk/Service-Search/Hospital/LocationSearch/8/Consultants

To verify that doctors are licensed to practice, check the General Medical Council register, which can be freely consulted online. The register includes details of specialist qualification.

The Faculty of Physician Associates works under the auspices of the Royal College of Physicians. The Faculty is responsible for organising certification and recertification examinations for physician associates and accrediting university programmes.  For further information please see the FPA website: http://www.fparcp.co.uk/ or email FPA@rcp.ac.uk
