Fire! Plague! Revolution! London 1666: capital of calamities - half day guided walk 6 October 2016

A special half-day guided walk exploring the history of London’s deadliest decade through the eyes of a doctor, run by our partners at Discover Medical London, Thursday 6 October 2016.

Start with a guided visit to the exhibition 'To fetch out the fire', and discover the range of 'cures' that medical professionals used throughout the 17th century to treat war wounds, plague fevers and first degree burns. Then learn that, as soon as the fires were quelled, the physicians and others started to rebuild and heal their city.

Venture out into an area once countryside to unearth how the civil war weakened London, leaving it susceptible to disease and fiery destruction. Visit the location of the 'human shield' that Cromwell threw around the capital to prevent invasion by Royalist forces and find out how it became a temporary home for those seeking shelter from first the curse of contagion and then the annihilation of flames.

This promises to be a unique look at London’s most malicious century.

Start: Royal College of Physicians
Dates: 6 October 2016
Start Time: 2pm
Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes
Price: £10
