Introduction to critical appraisal (06/03/2019)

The 'Introduction to critical appraisal workshop' is an intensive 1-day workshop that will teach participants how to critically appraise published research, a key skill for everyone involved in research.

Delivered using presentations and exercises, the workshop will take participants through the different types of study design, relative and absolute measures of effect, and the process of critical appraisal, including an extensive risk of bias assessment.

What you will learn

This workshop will cover the following areas:

  • an introduction to critical appraisal
  • characteristics of different types of experimental and observational clinical study designs, including a detailed discussion of the pros and cons of each design
  • an explanation of relative and absolute measures of effect for quantitative data, such as risk rations, odds ratios and absolute risk difference
  • an introduction to forest plots
  • risk of bias assessment for a randomised controlled trial (RCT), including a detailed description of each individual domain
  • an introduction to commonly used critical appraisal checklists
  • the impact on clinical practice.

Excellent delivery, with opportunity to ask questions and clarify difficult areas.

Dr Tendekayi Msimanga, consultant in acute and general medicine, Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust

Aims

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • understand the principles of critical appraisal and why it is necessary
  • identify different study designs and know when to use them
  • appraise study outcomes and judge the quality of study methodology for RCTs
  • interpret different types of quantitative data and how to interpret results
  • assess whether the results could change clinical practice.

Who should apply

This workshop is suitable for all healthcare professionals (multidisciplinary) and all specialties, and those who are new to critical appraisal, or require a refresher session.

Some knowledge of basic research methods is required.
