Workplace-based assessment - London

Assessment of the clinical performance of doctors has become an important issue, both among patients and within the profession, following the redesign of specialist training. This interactive 1-day workshop will enable participants to use a range of assessment methods with confidence, in order to assess competence and performance more effectively.

The effectiveness of WPBA strongly depends on those undertaking the assessments. Assessors require training to help them to make robust, consistent, independent and defensible judgments.

GMC, 'Workplace-based Assessment: A guide for implementation'

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • recognise the differences, and the relationships, between assessment and appraisal
  • use appropriate methods of assessment in a way that ensures reliability, validity, transparency, feasibility and educational impact
  • provide good quality, useful feedback
  • identify and maximise opportunities for workplace-based assessments
  • overcome problems related to the assessment process.

It was useful as a trainee and as a trainer. Discussions from this workshop on how to give feedback systematically and how to deal with a defensive assessee […] were very practical and worth learning.

Dr Pyae Phyo San, CMT, York District Hospital, attended January 2017

Who should attend?

This is a popular workshop and is suitable for doctors from all grades and specialties, including trainees.

Very useful discussions with doctors from other specialties and regions on the conundrums of WPBAs! I now have a much better idea of how to do them and how to give effective feedback. Should be a requirement for all clinical supervisors.
