The RCP and the UKRI Clean Air Champions have submitted joint evidence to the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee’s inquiry on air quality.
The Committee’s inquiry highlights how COVID-19 has brought air quality into sharper focus. Emerging research suggests that poor air quality is correlated with higher death and infection rates from COVID-19. The inquiry aims to revisit the Committee’s 2018 Improving Air Quality report and whether the government’s 2019 Air Quality Strategy and the Environment Bill will deliver the national leadership necessary to deliver the ‘step change’ in how air pollution is tackled in the UK.
Our submission includes calls for a legally binding commitment to meet World Health Organization (WHO) guideline levels for particulate matter pollution by 2030, and a new ‘clean air duty’ that requires all public bodies to factor air pollution into all their decision-making.
