RCP SAS lead Dr Jamie Read has been appointed to the post of dean of medical education and director of the Centre for Medical Education by Cardiff University, which he will be taking up from September 2022.
He represents the first staff, associate specialist and specialty (SAS) doctor to have been appointed to the key leadership role of dean of medicine in the UK, a testament to the importance of SAS doctors within the health and care sector.
Dr Read said: ‘I’m really pleased to have been appointed to this key educational leadership role with Cardiff University, even more so as the first SAS doctor to undertake a dean role. This represents a hugely positive recognition of the skills and abilities possessed by SAS doctors and that our skills are transferrable into the many leadership and management roles already available to consultant colleagues. I am especially grateful to Cardiff University for this opportunity, and the ability to promote SAS careers to the next generation of doctors.’
SAS doctors make up approximately 30% of the physician workforce and play a vital role in the delivery of NHS services. The RCP has been working hard to bring about significant change for the SAS physician workforce, and in February 2022 published an SAS doctor strategy aimed at creating equity of opportunity for SAS doctors.
Dr Cathryn Edwards, RCP registrar, said: ‘Jamie has been leading on the implementation of the RCP SAS strategy since his appointment to the RCP SAS lead role last year.
‘He has recently been elected to fellowship of the RCP and we are delighted to see his leadership skills recognised in this appointment to dean of medical education at Cardiff. Many congratulations from all your RCP colleagues.’
