On day one of Medicine 2019, Professor Bryan Williams gave a presentation on the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) and its recent update, NEWS2.
In his talk, Professor Williams explained the genesis of the system, how the NEWS was developed and launched in 2012. Talking about the impact of the NEWS, Professor Williams said: ‘Organisations had to look at their operations and systems and realised they didn’t have enough, for example, 24/7 cover, or high dependency unit beds, and eventually this led to system change and a safer system.’
He also celebrated the success and influence of NEWS: ‘It is now used by special forces in the United States, 250,000 NHS staff are self-trained in NEWS, and the e-learning has been an amazing success.’ The NEWS2 e-learning tool is available on the RCP website.
Professor Williams is chair of medicine at University College London, and chaired the NEWS and NEWS2 development groups for the RCP.
