The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and British Society for Gastroenterology (BSG) are pleased to announce the joint appointment of Professor Jonathan Brown to the role of informatics lead for gastroenterology in the Health Informatics Unit (HIU) at the RCP.
Jonathan will be based in the HIU and will work with the team to develop and implement a strategy for medical informatics, with a particular focus on gastrointestinal medicine. He will also sit on the BSG’s Clinical Services and Standards Committee where he will lead on information issues. His work will build on the HIU’s expertise and achievements in defining clinical record standards with extensions into the domains of gastroenterology and endoscopy reporting.
This signals a new partnership that it is hoped will become a model for further partnerships with other specialities across informatics.
Professor Jonathan Brown said:
I’m really pleased to be working with the HIU and representing gastroenterology in this first partnership with specialities. It is a great opportunity to raise awareness about health informatics within gastroenterology and to share best practice across both informatics and gastroenterology.
Professor John Williams, Director of HIU said:
I am delighted Jonathan has been appointed to work with us to take forward health informatics in gastroenterology. If we can enable more efficient recording and communication of structured clinical data in patient records it will benefit individual patients, and also enable the specialty to generate national data about activity and outcomes that will inform service developments, audit and research. It will also provide data to support individual appraisal. We hope that gastroenterology will be the first of many specialties to work with us in this way.
Tom Smith, BSG Chief Executive said:
Having a technical and strategic grasp of informatics is crucial to understanding how to improve care and develop quality services for patients. We are really pleased to have created this new role together with the HIU and to have such a strong individual in Jonathan to forge this partnership.
- Professor Jonathan Brown is director of gastrointestinal and cardiac medicine at Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust. He also chairs the Expert Working Group in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is a member of the NHS England/Monitor Payment Strategy Implementation Group.
