RCP President Responds to Health Select Committee Report on Alcohol

Responding to the publication of the Health Select Committee’s Report on Alcohol (HC 151-I), Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians said today:

Politicians, first in Scotland but now more widely in the UK, are coming to the inevitable conclusion that existing policies to reduce health harms caused by alcohol misuse have failed. It is no longer possible to ignore the evidence which suggests that improved regulations would save lives. This authoritative report from the Health Committee gives welcome impetus to the consensus, much wider and deeper than the Westminster Government has acknowledged, that the time has come for stronger regulation, particularly on price and availability.
