RCP president urges PM to find long-term financial settlement for NHS

The Royal College of Physicians' (RCP's) president, Professor Jane Dacre, has called on prime minister Theresa May to find 'long-term solutions, not short-term fixes' to the unfolding winter crisis.

In a message to the prime minister, Professor Dacre said:

We welcome Theresa May’s apology to people who are waiting for operations and other treatment due to the severe pressure the NHS is facing.

Today I have re-sent the prime minister a copy of our plan to improve health services, including a long-term financial settlement for the NHS and the need to invest in, value and support the NHS workforce. Our physician members, who are doing a fantastic job despite the difficulties, have told us that the NHS is in a state of perennial winter – we need long-term solutions, not short-term fixes.

We are already supporting NHS England via the National Emergency Pressures Panel (NEPP), but are looking forward to helping address the long term sustainability of the NHS with NHSE and the government.
