RCP responds to the general election

RCP president Professor Andrew Goddard responds to the results of the 2019 general election.

“The NHS, patients and the people who work in it have been at the centre of this election. On behalf of the doctors and other healthcare professionals we represent, we will hold the new government to account for the promises it has made.

“We have welcomed the opportunity to be involved in resolving the significant challenges our health and social care system faces, and we look forward to that continuing. Now that we have a secure government with a working majority, we expect swift action."

“As the 31 January gets ever closer, it is critical that patient safety is placed at the heart of Brexit negotiations. That means making sure we are welcoming to doctors and other clinicians from overseas, and ensuring the continued supply and safety of medicines.

“In the longer term, we need to grow the number of doctors in training by doubling medical school places. And this government must stay true to its word and be the government that finally puts social care on a sustainable footing."
