The RCP has responded to the Health and Social Care Committee's report 'Social Care: Funding and Workforce'.
Dr Jonathan Steel, Royal College of Physicians' lead fellow for social care said: "The way that we care for each other in our time of need defines us as individuals and together as a nation.
"We must become a society that is defined by caring based upon need and not ability to pay.
"The government needs to provide a new sustainable funding settlement for social care which breaks down the funding barriers that perpetuate the divide between health and social care and creates a service that makes sense to those who need it and those of us who work within - a service we can all be proud of."
