RCP supports draft EU guidelines on antimicrobial use

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has contributed to a consultation by the European Centre for Disease Surveillance and Control (ECDC) on proposals for draft EU guidelines on the prudent use of antimicrobials in human medicine.

Among other issues, the consultation addresses the needs of prescribers who are ultimately responsible for the decision to use, and the choice of, antimicrobials in patient care, and their need to be provided with appropriate training, guidelines and information in order to be able to exercise prudence in the prescribing of antimicrobials and manage patient expectations.

The RCP has joined other members of the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) in endorsing the EPHA submission to the consultation. The European Commission asked ECDC to develop draft EU guidelines on the prudent use of antimicrobials in human medicine.

These draft guidelines will be a key contribution to support the European Commission in its aim of producing a finalised set of EU guidelines document in due course.
