Response to House of Lords inquiry into EU alcohol strategy

The UK Alcohol Health Alliance - comprising some 40 British organisations including the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) - has submitted a response to the House of Lords inquiry into EU alcohol strategy.

The response notes that a key omission from EU alcohol policies at present is a set of specific, measurable and timely targets or indicators, outlining the EU ambitions for reducing alcohol harm. This is in contrast to current WHO strategies.

In addition, tensions are highlighted between the promotion of free trade in the EU and the protection of public health, noting how member states’ efforts to implement pricing policies designed to protect public health could be undermined.
