The Queen's Speech, delivered earlier today, provided the UK government with an opportunity to highlight its priorities for the months ahead.
In reponse to the speech, Professor Andrew Goddard, president of the Royal College of Phyisicians said:
“The NHS workforce crisis is arguably the greatest issue facing our NHS today, so the government is right to use the Queen’s Speech to focus on increasing the number of international staff we recruit.
“Any new visa system must however support the entire health and care system. Social care has for far too long been under-resourced and understaffed. Reform can not wait any longer and this government must bring forward proposals swiftly.
“The promise of more staff is incredibly welcome but we need the number of medical students to be doubled if we’re to have a workforce that is fit for the future.”
