Shortlist announced for RCP Excellence in Patient Care Awards 2018

The RCP would like to thank every individual and team who took the time to enter the awards or to nominate a colleague. After much consideration, the judging panel has decided on the following shortlist across the eight categories.

The winners will be announced and presented with their prize during a dedicated awards ceremony held in the Dorchester Library at the RCP London building on the evening of 29 May 2018.

Innovation

Awarded for outstanding clinical activity that contributes to excellent patient care in an innovative and forward-thinking way:

• Genomics England Clinical and Science Team – The 100,000 Genomes Project
• The National Neonatal Research Database Team – A road map for NHS 'big data' to improve care, services and patient outcomes
• North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust Composite Workforce Group – Mind the gap! Developing a composite workforce to keep our services on track
• St Giles Palliative Pain Management Team – Use of a virtual reality guided meditation app for the reduction of pain.

International

Awarded for outstanding clinical activity that contributes to excellent patient care overseas:

• Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Clinical Pathways Program Team – The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Clinical Pathways Program
• Professor David Raymond Owens – Supporting the establishment of diabetes care services in Mauritius, Trinidad and Peru
• The INSPIRED COPD Outreach Program – The INSPIRED COPD Outreach Program: From research and proof-of-concept to spread and scale-up across Canada
• Sri Lanka Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease Initiative – Battle against diabetes and cardiovascular diseases: Achievements of Sri Lanka Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease Initiative (SLDC).

Medical education and training

Awarded for outstanding work in enhancing medical education and training:

• Making Insulin Treatment Safer (MITS) Team – Making Insulin Treatment Safer: supporting foundation doctors in safe prescribing
• Dr Melanie Nana and Dr Holly Morgan: thecore.wales – 'thecore': an online resource developed by trainees for trainees to improve the core medical training experience
• SCRIPT Team – SCRIPT: an elearning programme to improve medical education relating to prescribing and therapeutics
• Type 1 Diabetes Comic Collaborative – Type 1 Diabetes: The Comic Book

Patient-centred care

Awarded for excellent patient care that is receptive to the patient's needs, supporting a personalised and coordinated approach to care:

• The RAPID Lung Cancer Team – Rapid access to pulmonary investigation days: the RAPID programme in suspected lung cancer
• Salford Royal MY-IBD Portal Team – Making life better: My-IBD Portal
• Sandwell & West Birmingham CCG and NHS Trust DICE Team – A 3-year experience from Sandwell & West Birmingham integrated diabetes model regarding individualised patient-centred diabetes care – the way forward?
• Young Adult and Transition Care Team – Modification of young adult outcomes on haemodialysis- changing 'our' practice.

Quality improvement

Awarded for outstanding clinical activity that contributes to excellent patient care by applying best practice and aiming to improve performance:

• Acute Frailty Network – Supporting people with frailty and urgent care needs to get home sooner and healthier
• The Derby Respiratory Infection Team – A novel paradigm in the management of community-acquired pneumonia
• Joint Alcohol & Hepatology Multidisciplinary Team – Improving quality and reducing frequency of hospital care for alcohol-use disorder patients through a multidisciplinary team approach
• Yorkshire and Humber AHSN Improvement Academy Mortality Team – The Yorkshire and Humber Mortality Review Programme

The Lancet research award

Awarded for outstanding research activity that contributes to excellent patient care:

• Imperial Weight Centre – Metabolic changes and diabetes microvascular complications 5 years after obesity surgery
• The METOP Team – Optimising the use of methotrexate in clinical dermatology
• Northumbria Group Clinics – Harnessing new models of care for chronic disease: co-design & sustainable implementation of group clinics into UK clinical practice
• REDUCe Study Team – Palliative long-term abdominal drains versus repeated drainage in individuals with untreatable ascites due to advanced cirrhosis: a feasibility randomised controlled trial.

Contribution to the profession - consultant

Awarded for outstanding contribution to the medical profession:

• Dr Claire G Nicholl – consultant geriatrician
• Dr Jaffar A. Al-Tawfiq – consultant, infectious diseases and head of prevention and control of infection
• Dr Nick Levell – consultant dermatologist
• Dr Sami Firoozi – consultant interventional cardiologist.

Contribution to the profession - trainee or SAS doctor

Awarded for outstanding contribution to the medical profession:
