This month we are highlighting our longer programmes and career opportunities at the RCP.
Emerging Women Leaders Programme
Applications are open – funded places available
The Emerging Women Leaders Programme is designed specifically to address the under-representation of women in leadership roles within the RCP and the wider medical profession. The year-long programme (which comprises 5 teaching days) is designed to develop leadership in two groups of women – emerging leaders who are early on in their careers, and those who have potentially faced barriers to leadership in the past. For both groups, the aim is to provide the additional skills needed to confidently take the next steps into leadership.
The programme achieves these aims through interactive workshops, access to mentoring from senior medical leaders, access to support from programme alumni, peer group support and through opportunities for professional networking.
Applications for the 2023/24 cohort are now open with limited funded places available from Illumina Corporate Foundation. Applications close on 5 June. If you have any queries, please contact WomenInMedicine@rcp.ac.uk.
MSc in Medical Education
Delivered by experienced teachers and senior clinical medical education leads and consultants, this part-time, flexible modular programme is designed for doctors wishing to develop in their role as educators. Applications are open and are reviewed on a rolling basis, with the first application review on 1 June, offers will be made shortly after. The final closing date for applications is 31 July. We advise you to apply early as applications may close before the closing date if all places are offered.
The RCP’s six-step course for the new consultant
Applications are open
The RCP has developed a programme using the first-hand experience of its officers, including best leadership practice and changing priorities. The programme will explore the role of a new consultant with the aim of successfully maximising the opportunities presented by the role.
Expanding on RCP Education’s clinicians as leaders theme, this much-needed year-long programme is aimed at those stepping into a consultant role, including post CESR SAS doctors.
The need for this programme was evidenced in the regular post CCT survey, which showed that only 25% of new consultants had access to a trust-delivered development programme, and only 64% had a job planning meeting before they began their consultant post.
This programme has been designed by a team including senior clinicians and new consultants and includes patient representation. The programme consists of 6 contact days that will explore various themes, with wellbeing woven through the days.
Applications are open and will close on 31 July 2023.
'It would be nice to be in touch with other consultants. I felt overwhelmed and unsupported when I started, literally "thrown in at the deep end" in a new region and new unit, a slightly gentler introduction would have been welcomed.'
Do you need any education programmes commissioned or delivered?
We are increasingly being asked to adapt or tailor our successful leadership and medical education programmes for all sorts of healthcare organisations so if you need someone to deliver something for you – especially at scale, then get in touch for a preliminary chat. We can deliver at a venue of your choice, at the RCP at The Spine in Liverpool, at the RCP at Regent’s Park in London, or in our virtual classroom.
- We have successfully delivered UK wide effective teaching skills for clinical scientists and other healthcare staff in the genomics hubs, and we continue to work with hubs to develop their staff.
- We have just launched a year-long leadership programme with residential 2-day teaching sessions and networking opportunities tailored to the Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) stroke programme with the aim of forming a leadership academy – thus fulfilling one of the key aspects of the GIRFT programme.
- We are happy to come to your trust to deliver an ‘off the shelf’ workshop, such as our Educational Supervisor workshop. Alternatively, we can deliver a workshop in our virtual classroom setting.
Get in touch – we are always happy to talk. You can register your interest to be contacted, or email education.courses@rcplondon.ac.uk
