Information standards for recording tobacco use in electronic health records

This report provides an overview of a project to develop information standards for the recording of patients’ tobacco use in electronic health records (EHRs).

The report includes a summary of the rationale for developing the standards, the approach used in their development, a description of an information model created as part of the standard, and implementation considerations.

The standards have been developed to align with the assurance processes of the Professional Record Standards Body (PRSB). The report will be of interest to members of the PRSB, health and care providers, health and care information system suppliers, health and care commissioners, and relevant professional bodies including NHS England, NHS Digital and Public Health England, and their equivalents in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
