Reports: COPD

COPD clinical audit reports for 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2019/20 are publicly available on the NACAP website.   

These reports detail the care received by patients admitted to hospitals with flare-ups of COPD in England, Scotland* and Wales. Data are presented at national and country level for key processes and outcomes measures.  Recommendations, and QI priorities for the delivery of COPD care are also included.  

*Data from adult asthma services in Scotland were included from the audit between 1 November 2018 and 6 November 2020, after which the Scottish Government, on behalf of NHS Scotland and other stakeholders, withdrew from the audit.

  • Data analysis and methodology reports  
    Full data analyses from which the key findings and recommendations were derived, presented in tabular form. 
     
  • Benchmarked key indicators  
    Unadjusted benchmarking of key indicators for participating hospitals. 
     
  • Patient outcome reports  
    Medium-term outcomes for clinical report patient cohorts using linkage data from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for Admitted Patient Care (APC), Digital Health Care Wales (DHCW)’s Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW) and Office for National Statistics (ONS). 
     
  • Case ascertainment report 
    Data showing Trust & Health Board participation in the NACAP audit of COPD secondary care in England and Wales from 1 April 2018 onwards, and in Scotland from 1 April 2019 onwards. 
     
  • Organisational audit reports  
    Data on the organisation and resourcing of COPD and adult asthma services.  
     
  • Key findings for patients, their families, and carers 
    Summary of key findings and recommendations for patients, to help them understand the care they should be receiving. Also available in a text-only version for use with screen readers. 
     
  • Data and variables  
    Aggregated data used in the most recent report, presented at service level. Also available at data.gov.uk
     
  • Regional reports  
    Data indicating how provision of COPD care by individual hospitals and Sustainability Transformation Partnerships (STPS) (England) and Health Boards (Scotland & Wales) compares to the national median and to other centres/STPS/Health Boards.  
    Moving forward, data will be presented at Integrated Care Service (ICS) level.
