The medal is awarded for ‘an outstanding contribution to photography and/or its application in the service of medicine and surgery’.
Previous winners of the award include medical imaging pioneer Professor Anders Persson (2013) for advancing clinical work with computed tomography, and Micrima and the University of Bristol Microwave Imaging Group (2012) for their work in developing radiowave radar technology for medical imaging applications, focusing on breast cancer screening.
The criteria for the selection are deliberately ambiguous so as to entice submissions from people working in different spheres of photography. Members are also invited to recommend individual colleagues (or teams) who have made major contributions in the broad field of medical photography.
