NAIF annual report 2026

At Galnce (1)

'One of the most encouraging aspects of this year's report has been the positive response from organisations as NAIF expanded to include different injury types for the first time. Teams have taken on the challenge to successfully adapt their local processes to collect and submit high-quality data, helping to build a richer picture of how to prevent and manage inpatient falls'.

Dr Julie Whitney, NAIF clinical lead

Live data for the key performance indicators (KPIs) are available on the Crown webtool.

Spotlights and recommendations

To help translate the 2026 NAIF report findings into action. NAIF has identified four priority areas for healthcare improvement, referred to as 'Spotlights'. These spotlights highlight where Trusts and Health Boards (HBs) can focus improvement activity to support better care for patients.

  1. Trusts and HBs to develop systems to enable audit data to be easily visible within a patient's healthcare records.

  2. Trusts and HBs to review fall prevention processes in emergency departments (EDs).

  3. Trusts and HBs to reduce variation in effectiveness of post-fall checks (KPI 2) based on injury type.

  4. Trusts and HBs to improve the effectiveness of post-fall medical examination.

  1. Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and Welsh Health Boards (HBs) to strengthen oversight of participation and case ascertainment in NAIF.

  2. ICBs and Welsh HBs to ensure standardised post-fall processes and workforce competency to support effective post-fall management.

  3. ICBs and Welsh HBs to ensure effective falls governance arrangements and local policies reviewed against NAIF-recommended practices.
