The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) today launches an innovative eLearning tool to support secondary care doctors going through the revalidation process.
Now that revalidation has been introduced, all licensed doctors must compile a portfolio of supporting information and meet with an appraiser on an annual basis.
Preparing for revalidation guides doctors through the process and principles of revalidation, how best to prepare a portfolio and supporting information, and how to approach the appraisal discussion itself.
The eLearning package has been developed with input from revalidation experts, including Dr Ian Starke, RCP medical director for revalidation. The package comprises of eLessons, videos, practical activities, tests and personalised information through an individual workbook. Preparing for revalidation has been accredited for three CPD points.
Key focus of the Preparing for revalidation package
A key focus of the Preparing for revalidation package is simplifying the process for time-poor doctors. The package has been designed so that users can dip in and out whenever is most convenient.
Preparing for revalidation also comes with a free mobile companion that can be downloaded to a smartphone. The mobile companion allows users to continue their learning on the move.
Revalidation began in late 2012 and is the process whereby all licensed doctors have to demonstrate to the General Medical Council (GMC) that they are up to date and fit to practise. A fifth of doctors will be revalidated between April 2013 and March 2014, and the rest on a rolling five-year cycle.
Although many doctors will not have to revalidate immediately, they will be required to undertake an annual appraisal.
In addition to the eLearning package, the RCP is offering a number of free support tools to help doctors through revalidation:
- guidance for physicians on supporting information for appraisal and revalidation
- a revalidation helpdesk to provide specialty advice: firstname.lastname@example.org
- supporting information tools, including a personal clinical audit tool and validated colleague and patient feedback questionnaires
- Frequently Asked Questions.
The Preparing for revalidation eLearning package is available to non RCP members at £90. RCP fellows, members, foundation and student doctors can all access the package for £80. Further discounts are available for trusts purchasing bulk access.
