The FallSafe project involved educating, inspiring and supporting 17 registered nurses from acute, rehabilitation and mental health wards to lead their local multidisciplinary teams in reliably delivering these assessments and interventions through a care bundle approach.
A new component of the care bundle was introduced every 6 to 8 weeks over 9 months, and delivery of the full bundle was then sustained for 6 months. Process measures were collected monthly for the bundle components. Outcomes were assessed by reported falls rates adjusted by the proportion of staff certain that falls had been reported.
An extended evaluation of the FallSafe quality improvement project, Falls prevention in hospitals and mental health units, appeared in Age and Ageing. The full text is available for download.
FallSafe extension work
The FallSafe work was extended to collect futher data as well as implement the project in a single NHS trust. This was implemented in multiple wards but without the financial resources of the original 2 year project. For further information contact: CQID@rcplondon.ac.uk
